NEW YORK - Responding to the announcement that the United States would withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Jewish Congress released the following statement:
“The World Jewish Congress welcomes the ongoing efforts of the U.S. administration to address and rectify the unfortunate, long-standing bias against Israel within the United Nations system.
“We view today’s decision by the United States to withdraw from UNESCO as consistent with its stated goals.
“Since our founding in 1936, the World Jewish Congress has maintained active relations with the international community. In that light, we remain committed to working constructively with UNESCO member-states to counteract one-sided and prejudiced narratives concerning Israel.
“Moreover, we will continue to collaborate, as we have done regularly in recent years, with UNESCO’s experts in advancing vital initiatives, particularly those focused on combating antisemitism and promoting Holocaust education, both core responsibilities for which UNESCO holds a unique and essential mandate within the UN framework.”
