NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder sent a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Sunday following his decision to task Gadi Eisenkot with forming Israel’s next government.
In the letter, Amb. Lauder wrote:
“Dear President Herzog,
“On behalf of the World Jewish Congress, I congratulate you on your decision to entrust Gadi Eisenkot with the task of forming Israel’s next government. I commend the courage and sense of responsibility you have brought to this consequential moment. I also extend my warmest wishes to Gen. Eisenkot and the leaders joining this effort, who will need strength, wisdom, and resolve in the work ahead.
“Your decision offers an opportunity for renewal after three years of profound suffering. The atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, the ordeal of the hostages and their families, and the losses of war have left deep wounds in Israel. Across the Diaspora, Jewish communities have faced a wave of antisemitism that has shaken their sense of security. We share a deep longing for reassurance and hope.
“This moment offers a precious opportunity to begin healing and reaffirm the bonds between the people of Israel and Jewish communities throughout the Diaspora. Your longstanding commitment to the unity of the Jewish people gives particular meaning to your leadership now.
“We hear the voices of Israelis who seek a say in their democracy and their future. Our hope is that the government that emerges will listen to those voices and reflect the diversity of Israel’s society, drawing strength from the participation of citizens across its communities.
“We hear those seeking clear answers about October 7 and the conduct of the war that followed. Israel’s willingness to examine difficult questions through independent institutions and establish the facts will help rebuild public trust and strengthen its standing in the world.
“We also hear Israelis calling for a fairer sharing of the responsibilities of national service. Their desire to serve their country, and to see that commitment shared more broadly, speaks to the Jewish solidarity on which Israel’s future depends.
“Jews around the world have watched Israel’s achievements with wonder and pride. From the ingenuity of Iron Dome, which has protected so many lives, to advances in medicine and technology, Israel has shown the world what a small nation can contribute. We want our children and grandchildren to inherit that same sense of pride and possibility.
“Across the world, election after election is bringing winds of change. This is a golden opportunity for Israel to renew its relationships with the United States and Europe, strengthen friendships across political divides, and show the world the values that guide its national life.
“Thank you for taking this first step. As the work of forming a government begins, you can count on the World Jewish Congress’s commitment to strengthening the bonds between Israel and the Diaspora. We stand with you in the hope that this moment will open the way to a more united Israel and a more secure future for the Jewish people.”
