President Lauder Meets With Chile Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, H.E. Alberto Van Klaveren, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly at the Permanent Mission of Chile on Tuesday afternoon. President Lauder expressed the WJC’s desire to foster a stronger relationship between the State of Israel and Chile, as well as between the Chilean government and the Chilean Jewish community.

Chile is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in South America with about 16,000 Jews. WJC’s local affiliate is the Jewish Community of Chile.

WJC President Meets With President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder welcomed the President of Montenegro, H.E. Jakov Milatovic, to his office in New York on Tuesday afternoon for the meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Ambassador Lauder applauded Montenegro’s readiness to adopt the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism and to strengthen their relationship with the Jewish Community of Montenegro.

The local Jewish community of Montenegro consists of approximately 500 members as of 2023. The Jewish community in Montenegro has developed rapidily in recent years having been officially registered in July 2011. WJC’s local affiliate is the Jewish community in Montenegro.

On Tuesday afternoon, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder met with the President of Bulgaria, H.E. Rumen Radev, during which he expressed concerns over increased antisemitism in Bulgaria in recent months and emphasized the responsibility of the Bulgarian government to promote the accurate history of the country’s role in the Holocaust.

Lauder encouraged President Radev to strengthen relations between the Bulgarian government and WJC’s local affiliate, the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria-Shalom. 

According to the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR), Bulgaria is home to between 2,000 and 6,000 Jews. Almost the entire population is Sephardic, with a majority being of elderly age.
