NEW YORK – Reacting to the U.S. Senate’s confirmation last night of former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Thomas Nides as the next U.S. ambassador to Israel, World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said:
“At this critical moment in the U.S.-Israel relationship, I welcome the confirmation of Tom Nides as the new American ambassador in Jerusalem. It is my hope that Amb. Nides draws from his many years of service in the public and private sectors to enhance the essential partnership between Israel and the United States, home to the largest Jewish community in the Diaspora. The challenges ahead are great, but the opportunities for progress are greater.
“His expertise will be of value as he seeks to expand the Abraham Accords and establish a united front to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. I echo Amb. Nides’ support for a two-state solution, which represents the only way to bring the long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians to a just conclusion. And I applaud his commitment to repudiate the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement.
“During his confirmation hearing, Amb. Nides affirmed, ‘The United States remains unwavering in its commitment to Israel’s security.’ On behalf of the World Jewish Congress, I look forward to working with him to further strengthen and deepen U.S.-Israel ties.”
