A second Jewish community center has been inaugurated in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The Beit Shalom center is located downtown, across the street from Sofia’s ornate synagogue. Funding for its renovation came from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, World Jewish Relief and several other foundations and private donors. Beit Shalom will occupy three floors of the building, and the community will rent out the other two floors to obtain income. The center, which is not yet furnished, will include a gym, a café, children’s areas and other facilities. About 5,000 Jews live in Sofia.
