France's Interior Minister, Dominique de Villepin, has proposed that the government dissolve all neo-Nazi groups in the country, pointing out that the number of violent acts attributed to such groups more than doubled last year. He said that about 3,000 people belonged to neo-Nazi groups in France and that they were responsible for 65 violent acts in 2004 up from 27 in 2003. Under a 1936 law, the French president has the power to ban and dissolve any groups that provoke discrimination, hate or violence against people based on their ethnicity.
