A German election official has claimed that the death of a neo-Nazi candidate could delay the final result of the country's September 18 elections. The head of the electoral commission in the eastern state of Saxony, said it had been forced to delay voting in one district of the city of Dresden after the candidate for the far-right National Democratic Party died. The official said that a new election date for the district, which has roughly 219,000 voters, has not been set and pointed out that a new parliament could not be sworn in until all constituencies, including the one in Dresden, had cast their votes. She went on to say that if the election was closely run, as it had been in 2002 with only 1% separating the main parties, the result of the delayed vote could prove decisive.
