The silent film which predicted the rise of antisemitism
Jewish-Austrian writer Hugo Bettauer wanted to counter rising intolerance towards Jews in Vienna after WWI. One of his novels, adapted into a film, warned about the dangers of hatred. A year after the film's release in 1924, Hugo Bettauer was murdered by a Nazi.
"The City Without Jews," dubbed the first artistic statement against antisemitism, was lost for many years. Unfortunately, the film’s message still resonates today.
