Israeli scientist working to make disposable face masks reusable

Israeli scientist Yair EIn-Eli has applied for a U.S. patent for a reusable, self-cleaning protective face mask developed at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Ein-Eli, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion, argues that his technology has the potential to boost hygiene, mitigate shortages, and help the environment.

According to Ein-Eli, the self-cleaning masks have the capability to be charged via USB cable, but overall will look similar to regular masks.  Masks without the port will be able to be updated for a cost of only 90 cents.

“We’re aiming initially at medical staff who need masks and need to know that they are well-cleaned and working and functioning,”  EIn-Eli told The Times of Israel. 

“I’m expecting that this won’t only help hospitals that are trying to source protective equipment, but also the environment, by stopping many masks from being thrown away.”
