Bio

Alana is the Country Director of HIAS South Africa, the international Jewish humanitarian organization providing support and advocating for refugee rights.

Formerly the Diplomatic and Social Justice Liaison of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies and Vice President of the Council of KwaZulu-Natal Jewry, Alana was also the Social Justice Liaison of the Durban Holocaust and Genocide Centre. She is the former Deputy Chair of the Hate Crimes Working Group, a civil society network advocating for hate crimes legislation. Alana is a Steering Committee member of the WJC’s Jewish Diplomatic Corps and co-Chairs the Women's Representation Task Team. She has represented the WJC at the UNHRC and CSW. Alana is the Jewish representative on Religions for Peace South Africa and the African Women of Faith Network.

She holds a Master of Philosophy in Transitional Justice (UCT) and studies in Yeshivat Maharat’s Beit Midrash Program (first Orthodox yeshiva to ordain women).
