World leaders took to social media over the weekend to wish Jews across the world a happy Hanukkah, which began at sundown on Sunday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson posted a video, declaring that “Britain would not be Britain without its Jewish community." In addition, the Prime Minister reassured his Jewish citizens that as antisemitism resurfaces in Britain, Jews “have every decent person in this country fighting by” their side.
US President Donald Trump also took to social media, saying that he and the First Lady send their “warmest wishes to Jewish people in the United States, Israel, and across the world as you commence the 8-day celebration of Hanukkah.”
Over in Israel, Prime Minister Netanyahu lit a Hanukkiah at the Western Wall with Ambassador David Friedman, wishing a “Happy Hanukkah” and posting that this year we light the Hanukkah candles against all forms of antisemitism.
World leaders weren’t the only ones wishing Jews across the world a “Happy Hanukkah.” Steven Fulop, the Mayor of Jersey City, wished a “Happy Hanukkah to those celebrating” and posted a picture of Police Officer Raymond Sanchez receiving an award at a public menorah lighting in front of the site of the Jersey City kosher supermarket shooting.
All the way from space, Jewish astronaut Jessica Meir tweeted wishing her followers a “Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate it on Earth!” Along with the tweet, Meir posted a photo of herself with an overtop view of the Earth, while sporting Hanukkah socks with drawings of stars of David and Hanukkah menorahs.
