The World Jewish Congress (WJC) mourns the passing of the former president of the Swiss Jewish Community Federation, Professor Alfred Donath, who unexpectedly died at the age of 77.
New York/Brussels - 29 JUNE 2010 - The World Jewish Congress (WJC) mourns the passing of the former president of the Swiss Jewish Community Federation, Professor Alfred Donath, who unexpectedly died at the age of 77.
WJC President Ronald S. Lauder praised Donath as one of the great figures of Swiss Jewry: “Alfred Donath always fought hard to defend the Swiss community against all kinds of attacks. At the same time, Alfred Donath was always fair and sought to heal divisions and he leaves a great legacy, notably in the field of inter-faith dialogue, where he achieved good progress. A vice-president of the European Jewish Congress and a regular participants at WJC meetings, he also was a friend and defender of Israel, and he will be sorely missed by the WJC family.”
Founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1936, the World Jewish Congress is the international organization representing the Jewish communities in 92 countries around the world. It serves as the diplomatic arm of the Jewish people to governments and international organizations.
Jüdischer Weltkongress trauert um Alfred Donath
New York/Brüssel – 29. JUNI 2010 – Mit Trauer und Bestürzung hat die Führung des Jüdischen Weltkongresses (WJC) die Nachricht vom plötzlichen Tod des ehemaligen Vorsitzenden des Schweizerischen Israelitischen Gemeindebundes, Professor Alfred Donath, aufgenommen, der heute im Alter von 77 Jahren in Genf verstarb.
WJC-Präsident Ronald S. Lauder würdigte Donath als einen großen und streitbaren jüdischen Führer: „Alfred Donath war sehr engagiert, wenn es darum ging, das Schweizer Judentum gegen Angriffe zu verteidigen. Er war, wenn notwendig, unbequem aber immer auch fair und auf Ausgleich bedacht. Gerade seine Initiativen im interreligiösen Dialog haben große Fortschritte ermöglicht. Als Vizepräsident des Europäischen Jüdischen Kongresses und als regelmäßiger Teilnehmer der Treffen des WJC war er auch ein wichtiger Fürsprechers Israels. Er wird uns fehlen.“
Congrès juif mondial déplore le décès d‘Alfred Donath
New York/Bruxelles – Le Congrès juif mondial (CJM) déplore le décès de l’ancien président de la Fédération suisse des communautés israélites à l'âge de 77 ans.
Le président du CJM, Ronald S. Lauder, a loué la grande figure du judaïsme helvétique qui vient de disparaître. Ronald Lauder a déclaré : « Alfred Donath était un homme très engagé dans le défense de la communauté juive de Suisse contre toutes les attaques. Il n’était pas toujours commode et, lorsque cela s’avérait nécessaire, il n’hésitait pas être critique. Dans le même temps, Alfred Donath était un homme droit et équitable œuvrant pour la résolution des divisions. Alfred Donath laisse un grand héritage notamment dans le domaine du dialogue interreligieux. Vice-président du Congrès juif européen et participant régulier aux réunions du CJM, il était aussi un ami et défenseur ardent d’Israël. Il nous manquera. «
