The World Jewish Congress mourns the death of former WJC Vice President Nessim Gaon, a prominent Jewish leader, international financier and philanthropist, who passed away in Geneva on April 10 at the age of 100.
Gaon, the longtime president of the World Sephardi Federation, was born in Sudan in 1922, was educated in the United Kingdom, and served as an officer in the British army during World War II. A life-long devoted Zionist, he had close ties to Israeli Prime Ministers Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres. He played an important role behind the scene in the establishment of ties between Israel and Egypt.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family. May his memory be for a blessing and a source of inspiration.
