A report from an Israeli government body, the Global Forum Against anti-Semitism, has said that the UK media is responsible for increasing anti-Semitism in the county. Violent anti-Semitic attacks rose by 50%, to 77 incidents, in the UK last year. A total of 304 incidents were reported when crimes like verbal assaults and the desecration of graves are included, up from 163 a year earlier. An Israeli government minister, Natan Sharansky, singled out the left-leaning Guardian newspaper and BBC television for "likening Israel to a Nazi state" and said that "years of hostile reporting and commentary about Israel in the British press is now spilling into the streets".
