A Jordanian citizen was killed and three others wounded by rockets fired at targets in Aqaba, Jordan and Eilat, Israel, two adjacent cities on the Red Sea coast. One rocket struck open space north of Eilat, three hit Aqaba's hotel area, one Grad rocket apparently landed in the sea and one in the Sinai, in Egypt. It was the second such incident in the area less than four months.
It was not immediately clear who fired the missiles. Reports so far have listed the terrorist group World Jihad as a potential suspect for the attack, as well as Hamas. Both groups are known to train and operate in the Sinai. Egypt on Monday categorically denied that the attacks had come from its territory. Hamas also denied any involvement.
The US State Department called rocket attacks "deplorable" and said the actions seemed designed to sabotage plans to revive direct Palestinian-Israeli peace talks. Russia also denounced the attack. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow issued a statement in which it condemned "all terrorist acts including the firing of rockets at south Israel and Israel's disproportionate response to Palestinian attacks."
