Rabbi Marc Schneier, the chairman of the American Section of the World Jewish Congress and president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, will host a Shabbat debate with the new spiritual leader of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, Imam Shamsi Ali, on Saturday, 15 March 2008.
In an invitation to the event, Schneier writes: “Last week in a landmark statement, an historic appeal was made by world Muslim leaders in a letter titled ‘A Call to Peace, Dialogue and Understanding between Muslims and Jews.’ The letter addressed to rabbinic leaders and Jewish communities around the world is a promising sign for enhanced dialogue between our two faiths. Shabbat Zachor, March 15 at 11:00 am, the new spiritual leader of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York (East 96th Street Mosque) Imam Shamsi Ali, will join me for a discussion with the congregation, moderated by Joel Cohen. This plea by Muslim clerical leaders and intellectuals is a unique and unparalleled opportunity to foster dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding.”
