Rabbi Marc Schneier, chairman of the American Section of the World Jewish Congress and president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, was the only Jewish leader invited to address the 50th annual convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the premier civil rights movement founded by the late Martin Luther King, Jr.
In his remarks, Rabbi Schneier reflected King’s legacy and emphasized the past and present partnership between the African American and Jewish communities. It was the second time this year that Rabbi Schneier was asked to speak at a prominent civil rights organization’s event. Last April, he was the only Jewish community leader invited to address the official march commemorating the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.
