18 August 2006
Poland on 17 August marked the 63rd anniversary of the Jewish ghetto uprising in the eastern city of Bialystok. Government and Jewish leaders took part in the ceremonies, according to Polish media reports. Bialystok's deputy mayor Ryszard Zimnoch said it was especially important for young people to commemorate the history of the Holocaust and understand the Jewish contribution to Polish culture. The Nazis quashed the uprising by around 300 Jews after a few days. In the wake of the revolt, most of the city’s 50,000 Jews were deported to the death camps, and only a few hundred survived World War II.
