The respected "Manila Times", an English-language newspaper on the Philippines, has used to the Yiddish word "chutzpah" to illustrate in an opinion piece what it regards as astute political maneuvering by re-elected president Gloria Arroyo. The editorial comment, written by Leandro V. Coronel, says that "One new way to define chutzpah is to run for President by telling the electorate you have the experience and expertise to lead the country out of its misery and, after winning, go back to the citizens with a beggar’s tin can asking for alms to save the country from its misery." President Arroyo had had the gall of "previously bragging to the voters that she had what it takes to solve the country’s problems and now crying uncle in the face of a 'fiscal crisis'." It is rare that commentators and other in Asian countries make reference to Yiddish expressions.
