Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has inaugurated a new memorial to Holocaust victims in Budapest. Sculptor Gyula Pauer’s work, dedicated on Saturday, consists of 60 pairs of shoes cast in iron, a reference to the shoes of some of the thousands of victims shot into the river by the Arrow Cross, the Nazis’ Hungarian allies during World War II. 16 April is the Holocaust Memorial Day in Hungary, commemorating the date in 1944 on which Jews from the Hungarian countryside were put into ghettos. Also on Saturday, some 200 Hungarians marched outside the German embassy in Budapest in support of Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel, who was recently deported from Canada and is currently jailed in Germany while he awaits charges for allegedly spreading hatred.
