Ukrainian Jewish director Alexander Shapiro is filming a movie based on the occupation of Kiev by the Nazis during World War II. “The Death Match” will tell the story of Ukrainian soccer players who were forced to play in a tournament against teams of German army servicemen during the occupation of Ukraine in World War II. After the Kiev team won all nine games of that tournament in 1942, the Nazis sent the team members to a concentration camp and killed some of them. Shapiro told the news agency JTA that the movie, which also has a Jewish producer, will be completed by the end of the summer. The producers hope to have the movie screened in European film festivals by 2006.
