At the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands to the UN on Tuesday with Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, World Jewish Congress representatives raised concerns about the impact of rising antisemitism and polarization on the Netherlands. They stressed that rhetoric surrounding Israel increasingly reverberates within Jewish communities and called on the government to distinguish legitimate criticism of Israeli policies from antisemitism and ensure the security of its Jewish citizens and institutions.
The discussion also focused on the disproportionate attention given to Israel within the United Nations system and its broader impact on the Jewish diaspora. WJC representatives called for consistent standards at the UN and urged the Netherlands to make combating antisemitism a greater priority and not to participate in the upcoming High-level Meeting to Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
There are approximately 3,400 Jews currently living in the Netherlands. The Nordic affiliate of the World Jewish Congress is the Organization of Jewish Communities in the Netherlands.
