Jewish groups will hold a 'Stop Iran' rally to coincide with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to New York. The rally at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across from the United Nations headquarters will be held 22 September, when the Iranian president is to attend the UN General Assembly opening session. Jewish organizations held a similar demonstration during Ahmadinejad's visit to last year's opening of the General Assembly. The day after, Jewish groups will organize a conference on genocide in Washington to highlight the Iranian president's threat against the Jewish state.
Meanwhile, Iran has protested against the suggestion of an Israeli cabinet minister that Israel could kidnap Ahmadinejad over threats he has made against the state. Ex-secret agent Rafi Eitan, who was involved in the abduction of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1960, told German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' that such operations were not completely a thing of the past. In a letter to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, Iran's UN ambassador Mohammad Khazee wrote: "While the Islamic Republic of Iran has never threatened other nations," it "would not hesitate to act in self-defense to respond to any attack against the Iranian nation and to take appropriate defensive measures to protect itself, its people and its officials."
