This weekend, Jews around the world are celebrating Purim, considered the merriest of Jewish feasts. They remember how Esther saved the Jews of Persia from annihilation, as recorded in the Bible. Purim means celebrating Jewish survival over the centuries. Despite the plans of others to persecute and even annihilate Jews in the past, the Jewish people has survived. Purim customs include food baskets, pastries, a festive meal, charity, Purim parades and plays, carnivals, costumes and noisemakers.
