As Christians the world over gear up to celebrate Christmas, the Jewish community is gathering to mark feast of Hanukkah. Known as the Festival of Light, it also commemorates the re-inauguration of the Temple in Jerusalem . A single candle is lit each night over an eight-day period, while special foods are eaten and gifts exchanged. Dozens gathered on the other side of the world in one of Beijing's ancient royal palaces to light the ceremonial candles on the Menorah. China has a one thousand strong Jewish community. Yehoyada Haim, Israel 's ambassador to the country, said: "The Chinese and Jewish civilisations are among the oldest in the world. Hopefully this will bring us a step closer in our relationships between the Jewish people, the Israelis and the Chinese." Money is also offered to children as part of the holiday tradition, although these days it is more likely to be in the form of chocolate coins. Hanukkah menorahs have also been erected in cities across the United States.
