Over a hundred graves have been vandalized at the Jewish cemetery in Budapest, it has been reported. The vandalism probably took place over the weekend. However, due to the Shavuot holiday, the central Jewish cemetery on Kozma Street had been closed and the vandalism was only discovered yesterday morning. 130 tombstones were knocked down, many of them broken. No slogans or offensive graffiti were found at the site. The desecration was strongly condemned by Hungarian politicians and the media. The Budapest mayor has offered a reward of around US$ 5,000 and the police offered a reward of US$ 2,500 for information leading to the identification of the perpetrators. Acts of vandalism at Jewish sites are reported every year in Hungary, but Wednesday's discovery was unusual because of the extent of the damage.
