For the first time, an Israeli winery has won the top prize at Vinitaly, Italy's annual international wine fair. The Golan Heights Winery won the 2011 Wine World Cup, beating 3,720 wines from more than 1,000 producers in 30 countries.
The winery, founded in 1983 in Katzrin on the Golan, won the Vinitaly Special Award, where international wine experts and journalists formed the 105-member jury. Golan Heights wines are marketed under the Yarden, Gamla and Golan labels.
The Vinitaly International Wine Competition 2011 confirmed is status as the most selective and rigorous in the world by awarding only 70 medals to participants through procedures intended to ensure the anonymity of wines.
