Israel's foreign minister Tzipi Livni has called on the international community to impose sanctions against Iran over its refusal to halt nuclear activities. "Immediate sanctions must be imposed on Iran and should have been a long time ago because time is not just working against us, but against the entire international community," Livni told Israeli radio from New York. "I very much hope that the international community will take firm action... Iran is trying to play for time. Everyday that passes without sanctions being taken is a failed opportunity," she added. Livni will attend the annual UN General Assembly this week where Middle East issues such as Iran's nuclear ambitions are expected to top the agenda. Israel and the United States have demanded UN sanctions against Iran for its refusal to freeze all uranium enrichment activities by 31 August as demanded by the UN Security Council. Iran has insisted its nuclear activity is entirely peaceful and designed to generate electricity.
