Ceremonies are being held in Hungary this week to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Budapest Ghetto. The main ceremony was held on Tuesday in Budapest’s Dohany Synagogue where Hungarian dignitaries, including the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, took part for the first time in a Jewish commemoration. “I feel your pain. Your tragedy is my tragedy, and your tragedy is the tragedy of the whole nation,” prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said. Those present also paid tribute to the Soviet army for liberating the camps. In addition, several commemorations are being held in Budapest this week to remember Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest in 1944 but disappeared in January 1945.
