Germany returns painting to rightful owners

German authorities have returned a painting to the heirs of a Jewish man which had been seized by the Nazis' secret police Gestapo and was on show in the Cologne museum until recently. The portrait of Princess Otto zu Wittgenstein was painted in 1872 by the renowned artist Franz von Lenbach. Its owner Bernhard Altmann had to flee from Vienna in 1938 after the Nazi occupation of Austria. After the end of the Third Reich, the painting went into the possession of the federal government of Germany.
