The city of Cologne is planning to build a new Jewish museum. Four months after the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the Cologne's synagogue, Fritz Schramma, the city's mayor, has made positive comments about a museum to be built next to city hall. Abraham Lehrer, member of the board of the Jewish community, called Schramma's comments were a "surprising and positive step for us". However, the local administration already announced that it would not be able to cover the costs of the project. What is today the square before city hall was in the Middle Ages the heart of the Jewish quarter of Cologne.
