The German city of Munich has made Charlotte Knobloch, vice president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and of the World Jewish Congress and president of the local Jewish community, an honorary citizen. The 72-year-old Knobloch is only the second woman in Munich's history to receive this honor. Mayor Christian Ude presented her with the honor on Tuesday. Knobloch was born in Munich and survived Nazi persecution on a farm where a Christian family pretended that she was the illegitimate daughter of a maid. After the war, Knobloch father, a respected lawyer who had survived the slave labor camps, decided to stay in Munich, where he rebuilt the Jewish community. His daughter followed in his footsteps and later successfully campaigned for the building of a new Jewish community center. She is also active in Jewish life on a national and international level.
