Central Council of Jews in Germany President Dr. Josef Schuster led a delegation to meet with the leadership of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), including EKD Council President Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm. The delegations convened in a two-hour virtual meeting and addressed topics such as religious freedom in Europe, the threat of antisemitism and how to deal with the pandemic in congregations and society.
During the conversation, Schuster noted that religious institutions have shifted from promoting antisemitism to being a committed ally in combating antisemitism, saying, "For centuries, antisemitism was preached in churches. In the meantime, this has long been overcome, and churches are partners in the fight against antisemitism... Together, we will defend basic democratic rights such as religious freedom and the protection of minorities.” Toward the beginning of the meeting, President Bedford-Strohm congratulated the Central Council on reaching the milestone of 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany. Moreover, Bedford-Strohm noted how Jewish life has contributed to cultural and religious traditions, stating "Judaism is a multifaceted inspiration for our country beyond religious and ideological boundaries."
During the conversation, Bedford-Strohm also took a strong, unambiguous stand against the rise of antisemitism stating, "When Jews in Germany become the target of hatred and violence, and synagogues become the target of brutal terrorist attacks, then feelings of powerlessness and great sadness mix with disgust and anger in my mind."
Bedford-Strohm stated that religious institutions have a responsibility in this regard: “To this end, it is essential that religions join forces with civil society in the broadest possible alliance to show solidarity for Jewish life and to engage in the fight against hatred of Jews."
Schuster concluded the meeting by stating, “Christian-Jewish relations have never been as good as they are today. Together, we will defend basic democratic rights such as religious freedom and the protection of minorities. Especially in this significant election year, we will stand up for this."
The meeting closed with both delegations agreeing to maintain regular communication.
