Canadian Jewish leaders have criticized the United Church of Canada (UCC) for backing a boycott of Israel. The criticism came after the UCC's Toronto division endorsed a motion calling for economic sanctions and a boycott of Israel. The UCC, which represents some 300 churches, also issued statements in support of the Ontario wing of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which approved a controversial boycott of Israel in late May. David Katz, an official with the Canadian Jewish Congress, said the move was “an unjust and misguided attempt to punish Israel” that would be “counterproductive to achieving peace.”
