Belgian historians have discussed the role played by a Jewish organization during the Holocaust. At a conference at the Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance in Mechelen near Brussels, historians working with the government-sponsored CEGES Commission are examining the role played by the 'Association of Jews in Belgium', a group set up by the Nazi occupation authorities. The group has sometimes been referred to as Belgium’s 'Judenrat' since it encouraged collaboration with the Nazi authorities. CEGES has been assigned to examine the role played by the government and local authorities in the deportation of some 28,000 Belgian Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II.
