Germany's president Horst Köhler is to award on Thursday the country's Grand Cross of the Order of Merit to Noach Flug, the president of the International Auschwitz Committee. Flug, a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, is also the chairman of the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors in Israel. The President's Office said that Flug was being honored for his "decades-long work on behalf of survivors of the Holocaust and his tireless efforts to promote understanding between Jews and non-Jews and between Israel and Germany." Earlier this week, Flug was part of a delegation by the Jewish Claims Conference which agreed improvements in homecare provision to elderly Holocaust survivors.
