Argentina recognizes failure of the investigation into 1994 AMIA bombing

The Argentinean government has officially accepted responsibility for the authorities' failure to find out who was behind the bombing of the Jewish community center AMIA in 1994, in which 85 people were killed and hundreds wounded. President Néstor Kirchner issued a decree in which he points out that the State had failed not only to prevent the attack from happening, but also that successive governments had practiced a "cover-up" of the facts. The decree also clears the way for the compensation of the survivors and the families of those who perished in the attack. It enshrines into law Argentina's commitment given to Inter-American Commission of Human Rights in March. A law to detail rules for compensation is currently being drafted. The president also announced new measures to combat terrorism.
