The Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has said that Iran would announce unspecified new "nuclear achievements" if the United Nations took fresh steps against it over its disputed atomic program. In Iran's first public reaction to a warning by the United States that the UN Security Council was likely to impose further penalties against Tehran, Ahmadinejad accused world powers of using organizations like the UN for their own ends. "The Iranian nation will stand up for its legal right and will not retreat even one iota to preserve its nuclear right," the hard-line leader told a rally in the city of Shiraz, adding that Iran would "resist to the end".
