Promoting human rights and fighting antisemitism in Micronesia

Representative delivering the statement: Yonatan Hammerman

Thank you, Madam President.

As stated in the Report, Micronesia has shown commendable progress in safeguarding human rights, through the protection and strengthening of the institutions that support human rights.

We applaud the Government of Micronesia for paying special attention to the mainstreaming of gender in national and state programs, as well as putting in place a coordinator on the issue of violence against women. Special coordinators on human rights issues have previously shown commendable effectiveness and this decision is incremental for achieving protection of women’s rights to health and safety.

Micronesia has also shown its respect for human rights and the founding principles of the United Nation by its support of the promotion and protection of human rights in the international arena. By exhibiting an outstanding voting record in UN bodies and mechanisms in support of peace and human rights, Micronesia rightfully opposes double-standards and polarization that can only make a disservice to the noble goals that these bodies declare to pursue.

We wish Micronesia the best of luck in further promotion and safeguarding of human rights and to this extent, as to broaden and diversify the tools in use, we call upon the Government of Micronesia to join the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and to adopt its working definitions of Antisemitism and of Holocaust Denial and Distortion, in order to further institutionalize the fight for human rights and against discrimination on all societal levels.

Thank you.
