In collaboration with Centro-Sefarad Israel, the World Jewish Congress organized a two-part event for the final-year Diplomatic Cadets from the Diplomatic School of Spain last week. These cadets, set to become diplomats next year, will soon be deployed to various countries as part of their diplomatic service.
In the first half of the day, incoming diplomats were briefed on contemporary forms of antisemitism by Leon Saltiel, Director of Diplomacy at the WJC. Saltiel’s remarks, which also touched on the history of antisemitic tropes. was followed by a presentation on Jewish life in Spain by Ethan Bendahan, Spanish Union of Jewish Students (FEJJE). To round it off, the diplomatic cadets had the opportunity to have a frank discussion with Maram Stern, the Executive Vice-President of the WJC, and to ask him questions about topics and issues of pertinent interest.
Later in the evening, the WJC held a reception and Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony for the cadets, as well as for diplomats from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Israeli Embassy of Spain, and prominent Jewish leaders. Following the reception, Maram Stern presented a Chanukiah to Santiago Miralles, the Ambassador-Director of the Diplomatic School of Spain.
