Geneva - World Jewish Congress Jewish Diplomat Natasha Hausdorff (UK) delivered a statement on the United Nations Human Rights Council floor on July 8th on behalf of the WJC, questioning the Council’s slander of Israelis while ignoring the systematic abuse of Palestinians by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
“Under the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, Member States gave a solemn commitment to fulfil their obligations to promote universal respect for and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“Over the last two decades NGOs have continued to reveal the everyday, systemic, abuse of Palestinians by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, as a matter of governmental policy. They have established machineries of repression to crush dissent, including through the “habitual, deliberate & widely known use of torture”.
“Last month these crimes were the subject of a communication to the International Criminal Court.
“By ignoring abuses such as these, this Council becomes complicit. The lack of an international response to these practices has the effect of legitimising them.
“Why does this Council concern itself more with slandering the Israeli Government than with speaking up for Palestinian Arabs, against those that continue to subjugate, abuse and torture them?
“Abuses of Palestinians by Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, Lebanon, Syria and others.
Diverting attention from these abuses makes a mockery of the principles this Council was established to defend and promote.
“The World Jewish Congress calls on those members of conscience to denounce the failing of this Council in fulfilling its solemn commitment.”
