NEW YORK—The World Jewish Congress (WJC) held the first meeting of the Technology and Human Rights Institute’s (TECHRI) advisory council at its New York offices this morning, coinciding with the UN General Assembly. The closed breakfast meeting brought together key figures to discuss the Institute’s priorities for addressing online hate and advancing human rights through technology. Participants stressed the importance of building broader coalitions with tech companies to enhance transparency and provide researchers with better access to data, facilitating stronger evidence of the link between online hate and real-world harm.
Launched in June 2024, the WJC Technology and Human Rights Institute focuses on mitigating the rise of antisemitism and hate speech on digital platforms, fostering partnerships with tech companies, and promoting responsible use of AI and social media.
The Institute’s Advisory Council includes prominent members such as Yuval Shany, Inbal Goldberger, Gunther Jikeli, and Adam Ma’anit, all of whom bring a wealth of expertise in technology, human rights, and Jewish advocacy.
In addition to outlining the work plan for the coming year, the meeting also highlighted the necessity of ongoing collaboration between global leaders, civil society, and the tech sector to tackle these challenges and protect Jewish communities worldwide.
The Institute will lead a meeting as part of the WJC’s SECCA Forum on January 28, 2025, in Krakow, following the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. This meeting will bring together national government officials to focus on combating Holocaust denial and distortion on tech platforms.
