A synagogue in the Russian city of Saratov has been attacked by arsonists. A homemade explosive device went off last Saturday night near the Jewish temple. Security guards were able to extinguish the fire quickly, and only minor damage was caused to the building. "The community is in shock," Moscow's chief rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt told the JTA news agency, adding: "There is no doubt in the community that the intention was to burn the synagogue down." As of Sunday afternoon, it was not known yet whether police had opened an investigation into the incident. Saratov is a town in the Volga region.
