Poland’s prime minister Donald Tusk has begun a two-day visit to Israel. He will meet Israel’s president and prime minister. They are expected to discuss improving Poland's image in Israel and compensation for Jewish property confiscated by the Nazis and the Communists in Poland during and after the World War II. Tusk has promised to resolve this issue by the end of the year.
In 1939, Poland was home to around 3.5 million Jews, the largest Jewish community in Europe. Ninety per cent perished in the Holocaust. Poland is the only European Union member which has still not passed a law to compensate Jewish families for property confiscated. Total claims are estimated at US$ 20 billion.
