Michigan police have opened an investigation after a local Jewish political candidate’s Twitter account was hacked and used to like several tweets by prominent white supremacist David Duke.
Lena Epstein, who is running to be nominated as a Republican Senate candidate, posted a screenshot of an email from Twitter showing an unauthorized change to her registered email address as proof of the hack.
In a statement, Epstein said that “as a Jewish woman with deep roots in the Jewish faith, a proud lineage of Jewish leaders, and relatives who were killed in the Holocaust because of blind hatred and prejudice, there is little that could be more offensive to me than the suggestion that I support, ‘like,’ or condone David Duke, neo-Nazis, or any group that promotes hatred and prejudice.”
She also called on Brandon Dillon, the Michigan Democratic Party chairman, to stop sharing screenshots of the tweets she supposedly liked.
"As a Jewish woman, I call on MI Dem Chair Dillon to apologize and delete tweets immediately. Dirty tricks unacceptable & offensive,” she tweeted.
"The only apology should be from @LenaEpstein and the @MIGOP to this disgraceful candidacy,” he replied in a series of tweets in which he said that she should get her "story straight” and accused her of liking David Duke tweets prior to the time at which Twitter marked her account as being tamped with.
