A parent in Enola, Pennsylvania has lodged a complaint with the district authorities because a teacher of his kids wore a Star of David at school.
Ernest Perce said that a 1949 law prohibited public school teachers from showing any kind of religious symbol or imagery in the classroom. "They are there to learn about education, not to learn about the religious points of view. If a child is subjected to a teacher where a symbol of Judaism is allowed to skirt the law, I believe that a Muslim should be allowed to cover her head as well as a Christian to cover her head like the Bible commands,” Perce told US media.
Perce went on to tell ABC 27 that he was once an atheist, but recently became an Orthodox Christian. He was oonce the state director of the Pennsylvania chapter of American Atheists and led a protest against a resolution to call 2012 the Year of the Bible. On Halloween that year he made national headlines when — dressed as 'Zombie Mohammed' — he was attacked by an angry Muslim passerby. When his attacker was prosecuted, the presiding judge dismissed the charges and scolded Perce for his offensive behavior. That judge was later rebuked by Pennsylvania judicial authorities.
Perce reached out to the school’s district attorney and was not pleased with the response. The letter said that the school would not force the teacher to “discontinue wearing the religious symbol,” citing a ruling in western Pennsylvania that permitted a teacher assistant to wear a Christian cross.
