An American group's campaign to free the word jihad of its terrorist meaning has been opposed by a Jewish body, the London newspaper 'The Times' reports. The Arabic word jihad can mean 'inner struggle' and posters by the Council on American-Islamic Relations show a woman saying "My jihad is to stay fit despite my busy schedule. What's yours?" Another poster says "My jihard is to build friendships across the aile".
The pro-Israel group American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) said this was a whitewash and took out advertisements which depict Osama bin Laden reading: "Killing Jews is worship that draws us closer to Allah. That's his jihad. What's yours?"
However, the AFDI itself recently stoked controversy when it ran advertisements in New York subway stations characterizing Islamist opponents of the Jewish state as “savage.”
