The Jewish Council for Public Affairs has opened its annual plenum in Washington. Policy issues to be addressed at the plenum, held from Sunday to Tuesday, include church divestment from Israel, the Hamas majority in the Palestinian parliament, Iran’s nuclear program, rehabilitation of Jewish communities in the United States after the hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and keeping religion out of the public schools. High on the priority list for the umbrella body of Jewish community relations councils were the massacres in Darfur, Sudan. “Let us stop this outrage,” said Steve Gutow, the JCPA’s executive director. The 400 delegates are to end the plenum with a day of lobbying on Capitol Hill, joined by another 400 delegates attending a forum of the Hillel student movement.
