The Japanese authorities have ordered that former chess champion Bobby Fischer be deported. But Fischer lodged an immediate appeal in court, which means that he will not be expelled from the country straight away. The government ruled that Fischer did not meet the requirements to be granted political asylum in Japan. The Justice Ministry did not say when it wanted to deport Fischer, but an official said the controversial asylum seeker would most likely be sent to the United States, where he is wanted for violating international sanctions against Yugoslavia in 1992.
In recent years, maverick Fischer emerged from silence to give radio broadcasts and repeatedly expressed anti-Semitic and anti-American views. On what is seen as his homepage, numerous attacks on Jews have been launched and an "international Jewish conspiracy" and "Jew-controlled US" been decried. Fischer apparently believes that Jews and Americans are behind plots to both rule the world and ruin his life. At one point on the website, he also denies the Holocaust. Fischer's mother was Jewish.
