The Center Organization of Holocaust Survivors in Israel on Sunday condemned comedian Larry David following his remarks on Saturday Night Live joking about pick-up lines in a concentration camps, and demanded that he issue an apology.
“Larry David’s remarks last night on the Saturday Night Live show on the ways he would pick up Jewish women if he were in a concentration camp can be considered at best as bad taste, and at worst as sickening and disgraceful,” the center said in a statement.
“One can wonder why and how the latest scandals on sexual harassment in Hollywood and elsewhere (of which he accused most of the predators of being Jewish) brought to his mind Poland, Hitler and the Holocaust.
“Should we remind Larry David that Jewish women were humiliated, molested, disfigured and often raped in concentration camps? When so many of them died of hunger and diseases, remarks such as ‘I will take you out for latkes’ are way out of bounds.
“The Center Organization of Holocaust Survivors in Israel, representing all living survivors in this country strongly condemns such statements and demands an apology from Larry David.”
While hosting SNL, David joked in his monologue: “I’ve always been obsessed with women, and I’ve always wondered: If I’d grown up in Poland when Hitler came to power and was sent to a concentration camp, would I still be checking out women in the camp? I think I would,” joked David in his monologue.
“Of course, the problem is there are no good opening lines in a concentration camp. ‘How’s it going? They treating you OK? You know, if we ever get out of here, I’d love to take you out for some latkes.'”
